Welcome
to Penang, as seen through the eyes of local cameramen while 20th
Century Fox was shooting thier film "Anna and the King"
here.
Penang
has already been used as a location for many international film
productinos such as the French production of "Indochine"
with Catherine Deneuve and "Paradise Road " with Glen
Close as the main casts. Howeveer, it was "Anna and the King"
by 20th Century Fox starring Chow Yun Fat and Jodie Foster, shot
earlier this year in Penang, that broke all records in terms of
budget and grandeur. It also gave the greatest number of Penangitest
a supporting roles and extras in the film.
This
book is made possible through the efforts of an editorial committee
under the Penang Heritage Trust (PHT), who managed to borrow these
memorabilia photograhs of this unique and historical event in the
film industry from a number of Penangites who work as photojournalists.
The
user of the site as a film location has given a new lease of life
to the historical buildings and precincts by creating public interest
and often leading to thier being restored.
In
this book, the Editorial Committee has also taken the trouble to
give interesting historical insights into the buildings and site
used; therefore it is also an interesting resource book for the
local historian.
Finally,
we hope that after the filming of "Anna and the King"
in Penang and its subsequent wide distribution, Penang will also
be better known as an interesting tourist destination with its multiethinc
"historic city". Filmmakers can now look to Penang as
a potential film location that can be used to mimic almost any part
of Asia, not only because of its historic precints and buildings
but also because of its multiehnic population fromwhich to draw
supporting actors and extras.
Let
Penang lead as the ideal Asian Film location and tourist destination!
