"Scene"
This was the site for the Bangkok street scenes. Houses on this street
existed mostly in the pre-war period, some dating back to the late 1800's. Very little touch-up work was done to this street for the filming, most of the houses that appear in this scene in this movie appear in their original state.

"History"
The Armenians were a small but prominent merchant community in early Penang. Anthony Aratoon, patriach of a famous Armenian family in Penang, originated from Shiraz in Parsia and settled on Bombay and Calcutta before coming to Penang in the early 19th century. The Sarkies Brothers first opened the Eastern & Oriently Hotel in Penang (and subsequently the Crag Hotel in Penang Hill) before expanding their business to the Raffles Hotel in Singapore and The Strand in Rangoon. The Armenian Church of Penang was founded at Bishop Street in 1822, more than a decade before the one in Singapore. It was sold in 1937 when the last of the Armenian moved away. Today, there is little evidence of the Armenians Street. Briefly called Malay Lane, Armenian Street was also settled by Malays. The Straits Chinese who traded with Sumatra moved in during the middle of the 19th century and built their clan dwellings around their temples. The Penang Riots of 1867 were mainly fought in this area. By that time, the Straits Chinese, Arab and Achehnese traders had turned this area into a secret society enclave. In the early 20th century, the area was a hotbed for supporters of Dr. Sun Yat Sen. As the leader of the movement that led to the Chinese Republican Revolution of 1911, Dr. Sun became the first provisional president of China.
