"History"
Penang was an important trans-shipment centre in the northean Straits of Malacca. In the 18th century and early 19th centuries, Penang was a British trading post where pepper, clove, nutmeg and other
tropical products were traded for woollens, cottons and opium. At the turn of the century, it became an important port for exporting tin and rubber from the Malay Peninsula.

The construction of the Swettenham Pier was commenced in 1889 and completed in 1904 for $636,332,while the Goods Shed, with Edwardian-style facades, were commenced in 1904 and completed in 1907 for $130,650. The work were carried out by the Public Works Department. The Swettenham Pier has an external berthage of 600ft, long enough for "one large liner or two ordinary steamers" to berth along side, while the depth of water off the front of the pier is 30 feet at spring tide. Recailing the days of the P&O, Blue Funnel and the Mansfield line, many international cruise ships and passenger liners continue to call at the Swettenham Pier.
