Introducing the Penang Heritage Trust

The Penang Heritage Trust is a registered tax-exempt, non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in Penang. Our objective is to promote the conservation of Penang's heritage, and to foster cultural education about the history and heritage of Penang.

We were formed in 1986, and registered the following year. We began publishing our regular newsletter since 1993. In 1998, we restored the early 20th century Hainanese Mariners Guild building, at 26A Stewart Lane, which we subsequently turned into our office. On 25 June 2006, we moved into our present office, at 26 Church Street.

Our conservation efforts have won us representational seats on State Heritage Committee, State Suffolk House Committee, Local Government Consultative Forum, State Rent Control Repeal Committee, State Planning Department UNESCO World Heritage Listing Committee, and various inner city area improvement committees. We initiated the listing of George Town as on of the 100 Most Endangered Sites of the World by World Monuments Watch, N.Y. - 2000-2001, 2002-2003.
