Capturing the Social Benefits of Heritage
Saturday, 23rd August 2008

Visiting from London, PHT Life Member Stephen Shaw gave a talk on Capturing the Social Benefits of Heritage. He discussed inequalities in the property market affecting "hot" heritage buildings where higher market prices make access difficult for lower income residents who are supposed to benefit most from regeneration. He cited case studies in which conflict can sometimes lead to negotiation to secure benefits for disadvantaged communities. One such case was Sutton House, a 16th century Tudor mansion owned by the National Trust in Hackney in East London. Taken over by squatters for a while, the building was renovated and local communities engaged in the project. Sutton House now serves as community space open to visitors and as a resource centre accessible to the area's diverse communities.
